Another very approachable young Cabernet from Chateau St. Jean!

Chateau St. Jean Cabernet Sauvignon 2002 Sonoma, California $25
What the Wine Critics Thought: Wine Advocate 90 Points
A very good value in Cabernet Sauvignon is the 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma. This wine shows the flamboyant and exuberant characteristics of this terrific vintage for North Coast Cabernet. Sweet black currant fruit intermixed with plum, licorice, and spice box, low acidity, and lush fruit all represent a Cabernet Sauvignon to drink now and over the next 6-8 years. There are some terrific values in the Chateau St. Jean portfolio. People complain, with justification, about the high prices of the finest California wines, but this winery releases some offerings that are actually under priced for what’s in the bottle.

What We Thought: This has a pretty cedar and chocolate nose laced with black raspberry and a typical Chateau St. Jean ripe, full-bodied palate. It simply drips with jammy, black raspberry and blackberry flavors that are supported by very supple tannins. An elegant wine designed for drinking now. This is a would be a great choice the next time you are looking at an overpriced steakhouse wine list — about half the price of most Napa Cabs and more approachable.
