Provenance Cabernet Sauvignon 2001 Oakville, Napa Valley, California $35
What the Wine Critics thought: Wine Spectator 92 points
A deliciously rich and generous wine that's also well-structured, with layers of spicy currant, cedary oak and hints of mocha and chocolate forming the core flavors. Finishes with big, rich, mouthcoating tannins and a persistent aftertaste. Best from 2005 through 2013. 2,800 cases made. (JL)
What We Thought: Here is a very approachable, very smooth, very drinkable Cab. Don't look to cellar this one, it's drinkable right now and while Spectator says "drink through 2013" I have no idea why you would want to wait. Aromas of cedar and blackberries lead to a rich, full-bodied palate that is just loaded with cedar and vanilla tinged dark fruit all supported by lots of supple but surprisingly non-drying tannins.
