Sunday Morning Buttermilk Scones

It's a lot of work, but what better way to spend a rainy Sunday morning...

Makes 12 large scones

1/2 cup cold butter cubed
1/2 teaspoon grated orange zest
1 cup buttermilk (or add 1 tablespoon of vinegar to 1 cup of low fat milk, let sit 30 min and stir)
3 cups flower
1/2 cup sugar
Pinch of salt
2-1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda

For the topping:

milk for brushing
2 tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

In a mixing bowl combine the flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, baking soda and orange zest. Sprinkle the butter cubes over the mixture and cut in with a pastry blender until the mixture is coarse. Add buttermilk, and stir until incorporated.

Place the dough on a floured board then knead and shape into a large circle about 1/2 inch thick. Combine the sugar and cinnamon, brush the dough with milk and sprinkle with the cinnamon sugar.

Cut the dough into 8 wedges. Place on a cookie sheet, seperate the slices slightly and bake in a 425 degree oven for 12 minutes or until brown. Serve warm with a little butter and jam or better yet, orange marmalade.
