“Not Your Grade School Cafeteria” Sloppy Joes

One of the nice things about working a little less these days is that I can be home in time for a late lunch on Saturdays. A few weeks ago Linda and I decided to try an adult take on this classic childhood dish together, and we thought it turned great, much better than what we remembered from grade school days!

Serves 4


1 pound ground beef
3 cloves of garlic, minced
1 medium onion, diced in small pieces
1 red bell pepper, diced into small pieces
1 1/3 cups tomato sauce
1/2 can of tomato paste (small can)
4 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1/2 cup ketchup
3/4 teaspoon ancho chile powder
1/2 teaspoon regular chile powder
2 teaspoons Sriracha (or more or less, depending on how much “heat” you like)
salt & pepper to taste


Sauté garlic until fragrant, then add onions and red bell peppers and sauté until tender. Add all other ingredients, except ground beef, and simmer on a low temperature for 15 – 20 minutes, stirring frequently. In the meantime, brown ground beef in a separate skillet, seasoning with salt and pepper. Drain if necessary, and then combine the tomato sauce mixture with ground beef and heat together for another 5 minutes. We served “BBQ sandwich style” by topping the meat mixture with creamy coleslaw – delicious!
